SMOOTH SURFACE FINISH SACRIFICIAL ALUMINIUM COATING

IP Code No - IP9442 Not normally available for sale. Refer BN before issue

Product Description -

A product similar to Ipcote IP9183 but with a smoother surface finish. With a typically sprayed finish off approximately 20 micro inches, this product presents little resistance to air flow, or roughness for carbon and other deposits to adhere to. This material is also capable of being polished to finer finishes than the IP9183 and finishes of less than 10 micron inches have been achieved. A very smooth surface such as this is necessary to reduce friction and to enhance efficiency in aero engines.

This product has been specifically developed as part of a system replacement and an alternative to 5380 DP. Used normally in conjunction with IP9444 (Smoothseal) the two products are designed to give similar appearance and surface finish.

Approvals/References/Specs -

CPW88 , (MSRR9140 under review) Possible alternative for 5375 and 5380 DP systems.
IP9183 - Ipcote / IP9184 Ipseal (Khaki and Green) / IP9444 Smoothseal (Currently under development)

Performance -

The material passes the performance test for MSRR 9140, tests include:

  • 1000 Hours at 600ºC (1115ºF) dry heat
  • 100 Hours at 150ºC (300ºF) in ester lubricants
  • 3 Hours at 70ºC (160ºF) in Skydrol
  • 1000 Hours continuous salt spray (It actually completes in excess of 2500 hours for a 50 micron, 2 thou film thickness coat)
  • 10 Cycle high heat humidity, salt spay. 1 Cycle comprises 20 hours at 450ºC (840ºF), 2 hours in an ASTM.B117 salt spray cabinet and 2 hours in high 100% humidity cabinet. 10 Cycles are consecutive to each other.
Application -

Spray IP9442 until a wet coat is seen. Flash off for 15 minutes or until a matt grey finish is obtained. Apply second coat to the same criteria and a further 15 minutes flash off. Then 1 hour at 190ºC (375ºF). Then according to requirement if you are working with different aero engine companies, final stoving as dictated. Rolls Royce may specify 1 hour at 560ºC (1050ºF) in addition, P & W may stipulate 4 hours at 540ºC (1000ºF), or 5 hours at 515ºC (960ºF).

Alternatively another method for making the product electrically conductive is to bead peen the product having done the final stove at 350ºC (660ºF) followed by bead peening with 120-220 Silica Grit.
