LIQUID ROOFING MEMBRANE

Product Description -

A water based roofing membrane with very high performance, it ensures easy, reliable finishes for new roofs, as well as durable renovation of old, defective roofs.

Performance -

Excellent weather resistance.

Easy applied: Brush, roller or spray application, with no need for heating, no limited pot life, no cutting or fitting, and no after sealing of joints.

Easy cleaning: All equipment is easily cleaned with water before the compound dries.
Highly durable: Proven in the UK and Australia: no brittlement, takes up movement in the substrate.

Highly water resistant: Specially developed for use where "ponding" may persist on flat roofs, giving resistance to at least 10cm (4 inches) of water over 4 months and retaining adhesion during immersion.

Colours Available: White, Black, Tile Red, Green, and Light Grey

Recommended Substrate: Good bonding can be obtained on all sound surfaces with adequate roughness and porosity; e.g slate, burnt clay and concrete tiles, bituminous roofing felt, asbestos -cement, concrete, concrete and cement render, plastics: whether expanded, foamed or in sheet form, may provide insufficient key, and should be checked carefully, possibly with a small trial to assess adhesion.

Surface Preparation -

Cracked roofing, or roofs with expansion joints or other structural joints prone to movement must be treated with a reinforcing scrim using the procedure prescribed below. The application of a scrim in this way is always beneficial, and may be used to increase the strength and wearing properties of the roofing membrane in all situations.

After appropriate cleaning, disinfecting and priming (see table) a heavy brushed coat or liquid membrane is applied; the polyester scrim is then pressed into the wet coat, without being pushed into any wide gaps. The membrane should should then be left to dry before being finished with 2 brushed coats or one spray coat.

Special treatment for particular types of roofing material, and for certain common defects in old roofs is outlined in the table.

Application -

The liquid membrane can be applied by brush or spray; two brushed coats or one spray coat should give the required minimum coating thickness of 0.4mm (0.015 in) corresponding to a total maximum spreading rate of 0.5 1/m2 (15 yd2/ gallon).

Whenever more than one coat is applied i.e. with brush and when scimming over joints and cracks, there must be an adequate interval to ensure good drying, but successive coats must be applied within three days of each other.

Do not apply if rain or frost (roof temperature below 5ºC) are likely before drying is complete, although once dry, the membrane is fully resistant to frost and rain.

Minimum/maximum period allowed for overcoating:

Minimum- 2-3 hours
Maximum 72 hours
Recommended 24 hours

Water vapour transmission rates at appropriate dry film thickness based on 400 microns per coat. WFT (after 11 days at the rate 13g/m2/24 hours.  After 24 days at the rate of 10g/m2/24 hours.

Tensile strength at similar thickness (breaking strength - 67n/m2 (20º)

Elongation (at break 812%(20º) (elongated at 5cm/minute, using a 2kg load cell.

Life expectancy at stated thickness: 10-15 years.

ROOF TYPE OR CONDITION
RECOMMENDED PRE-TREATMENT
Grease or oily contamination Degrease thoroughly: dry, prime as required. (see below)
Concrete etc, with water repellent treatment Prime: eg.Epoxy system
Blown asphalt or cold bitumen Use suitable solar reflective primer
Asbestos-cement, concrete etc with powdery surface Use primer thinned 1:1 with xylol (xylene)
As above but heavily powdered, loose or flaking surface Brush thoroughly with stiff wire brush, saturate with domestic bleach diluted 1:4 with water.  Rinse thoroughly, leave to dry, prime as required.
Bare iron or steel De-rust fully; apply reliable anti-corrosive primer, and leave as recommended by manufacturer before applying membrane.
Aluminium trim etc. Clean off and treat with Chromate primer, leave for recommended period before applying membrane.
Galvanised iron Degrease if new, treat with an emulsion based anti-corrosive primer.
Copper Clean only if patina is present
Lead Clean and degrease as necessary
Wood Treat with recommended wood primer; allow to dry before re-coating with membrane use polyester srim, as described above.
