Cleaners and Pre-Treatment Systems for Aluminium & Magnesium

Background

For many years our sealants and primers for aluminium & magnesium have been used over proprietary pre-treatment systems from chemical manufacturers.

In nearly all cases these pre-treatments have been chrome containing solutions, and linked with our products have provided excellent corrosion protection.

Now with the necessary move to chrome free systems, it is our belief that it is most sensible to match the pre-treatment systems to the sealer/primer coat, and we therefore are proposing the following chemical systems from our own manufacture.

IpClean Alkali Cleaner

Water reducable cleaner concentrate, designed for use in both simple immersion or ultrasonic cleaning baths. Used at temperatures in the order of 60oC, the cleaner easily and simply removes all types of oil based and similar metal contaminants.

IpEtch Surface Etchant

Used to chemically finely etch the surface of the metal to be coated to aid the total adhesion and corrosion protection of the pre-treatment/finishing process. The mild chemicals used will not affect the molecular structure of the metals being processed.

A water diluatable concentrate. Once mixed with tap water, is simply applied by immersion or spray to the cleaned metal surface. Can be brush applied on small areas. Rinse and dry before application of the pre-treatment coat.

IpTreat Chrome free Pre-Treatment Coat

Water based immersion pre-treatment coat for aluminium or magnesium. Needs no rinsing after application, but requires heat fixing at 80-120oC. Can also be applied through spray systems.

Will provide temporary protection to coated parts, but should be overcoated with selected primer or sealant as soon as possible.

Corosion Protection

Aluminium cleaned and pre-treated with the IpClean/IpEtch/IpTreat system, and overcoated with Rockhard IP985 clear sealant, gave over 2000 hours corrosion protection(Salt Spray to ASTM B117), equating to the results with a typical chrome containing system.

Results on magnesium were slightly poorer than with chrome containing solutions, but development work continues on improvements on this metal, with evaluation to involve varying grades of both sheet and casting magnesium.
