In this issue we are reporting a number of new products that have been introduced or are being introduced by Indestructible Paint Ltd to meet current and future environmental requirements. Whilst new environmentally friendly materials are being introduced by the company, as part of an ongoing development programme, it is also involved in 'greening' a number of its existing products, Ever increasing demand for this type of coating, particularly from the international aerospace industry but also from industry in general, is the driving force behind the majority of the company's current development projects.

Green engines
Transatlantic
Indestructible are
directly involved in UK and US aero engine manufacturers
programmes to introduce 'greener' engines. Previously
described work on a chromate free, low VOC, xylene/toluene
free exterior coating system is now approved and production
is under way. In addition, the latest in the series
are two Rolls-Royce approved products, again both xylene/toluene
free. The new materials, IP9029-R2 and IP9188-R1, are
high temperature capable corrosion and erosion resistant
coatings.
Low chrome sacrificial inorganic coating
Designed to provide sacrificial corrosion protection and erosion resistance while operating at temperatures of 500-600°C on gas turbine blades, Indestructible's newly introduced Ipcote 9182 is a low chrome alternative to IP9183, a well established inorganic aluminium/silicate ceramic based coating. Also used in many other applications, these materials withstand 3,000 hours ASTM B117 salt spray, exposure to 650°C for 1,000 hours and cyclic salt spray exposure. They are also impervious to organic solvents even at elevated temperatures.
And an award
As a result of its work in the areas mentioned above, Indestructible were runners up in the process innovation category at the Surface Engineering Association awards, presented by Lord Hoyle at its annual dinner. The dinner and awards were held at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham.
UV cure systems
Demand for environmentally friendly
coatings comes from all sectors.
UV cured materials
are particularly suitable for this purpose as they contain
little or no solvent and are used in a number of areas
including on plastics.
Recent development work has
seen their benefits of low solvent content and rapid
cure rates being investigated in several new areas,
including:-
New Paints for the Rylard range

Indestructible Paint Ltd., has recently
added a number of environmentally friendly 2-pack polyurethane
paints to its range of Rylard marine coatings. Designed
to provide owners and re-finishers of pleasure craft
with the benefits of low VOC finishes, the new range
of Rylard colours are widely available from its European
distributors or direct from Indestructible.
Higher
paint solids, a result of the lower solvent level in
these products, provides the additional benefit of increased
spreading power and, therefore, greater economy of use.
Derived
from Indestructible's range of high performance aerospace
spray finishes, the new Rylard 2-pack urethanes have
been re-formulated for marine use. An extended
wet edge time now allows easy application by brush,
roller or paint pad in addition to spray.

Indestructible Paint Ltd., has been designated as a 'Tier One' supplier by Rolls-Royce under the new Exostar initiative.
Exostar is a web based procurement system. Using this Rolls-Royce and other aerospace company's such as BAE, Boeing, Lockheed-Martin and Raytheon can purchase quantities of coatings over the web from Indestructible or other suppliers in the network.
Scuff and adhesion
Special clear scuff resistant coatings are currently being formulated and developed by Indestructible for sealed anodised parts. Sealed anodising presents a serious adhesion and scuff resistance problem for any coating used to protect or enhance it. Although useful in a number of applications, the company is concentrating initially on specific materials for automotive and aerospace companies.
50years
of Rockhard high performance epoxy coatings
Rockhard! The name of this newsletter, and one of the principal products of Indestructible Paint Ltd.
Rockhard coatings are the epoxy, and epoxy phenolic based paints, first introduced by Gittings & Hills Ltd., of Birmingham, in 1952. Acquired by Indestructible in 1978 they have been one of the main sources of the company's growth since that time.
First used on the original SRN1 hovercraft and the thin magnesium skin of the Westland Wessex helicopter, Rockhard, in various forms has since been used to protect, seal and colour an enormous range of aircraft, defence, automotive and marine components.
Needless to say, the original Rockhard coatings have been developed significantly over the years - with new variations, formulated for a variety of different uses - being added from time to time.
Rockhard coatings now come in both 2-pack 'cold cure' types as well as the traditional stoving variants.
Many versions of the product have been used by the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, BAE, Rolls-Royce and a variety of foreign air forces and manufacturers.
Most coatings in the range are now formulated to be as environmentally friendly as possible, without loss of performance. Indeed the level of performance of these coatings has steadily increased since their introduction.
Rockhard is used in many industries where components require maximum corrosion and erosion resistance.
Examples of materials protected include: -
In such uses as: -
Magnesium protection
Rockhard is exceptional as a protective coating for
magnesium
The two items shown, to the right and
below, are aerospace castings sealed with Rockhard 985-111-800
stoving clear. An extremely hard coating with excellent
chemical and erosion resistance, 985-111-800 is also
resistant to humidity and trichloroethylene and withstands
anodizing or re-chromating.
It provides protection
to metals from attack in salt and other corrosive environments.
Used in conjunction with heavy film anodic coatings,
it can resist up to 8000+ hour salt spray, to ASTM B117.

Plastic coatings
Indestructible Paint Ltd., over the
last few years, have developed a variety of coating
types for plastics including air drying and UV cured
paints and lacquers. These materials often have unusual
properties and may, for example, provide colour flip-tones,
'pearl' effects or 'soft feel' to enhance the visual
and textural properties of the plastic products coated.
There are also safety coatings that change colour with temperature
The following are examples of some of these and their applications:-
Community Projects

Involvement in community projects is not unusual for Indestructible Paint Ltd., and sometimes the activity involves one or more of its customers.
Approached recently by the Hucknall division of Rolls-Royce Aero Engines, one of Indestructible's main customers, the company became involved in the refurbishment of Bonnington School and community centre playground. A requirement for suitable paints for both wall and playground areas was identified by volunteers undertaking the necessary work.
The company was happy to co-operate and supplied, free of charge, quantities of Agricoat acrylic water based masonry paint for walls and two-pack heavy duty epoxy floor paints for playground areas.
'Flowers' and 'traffic lights,' were part of the design, and were some of the items requiring bright colours specially made for the purpose.
These were considered essential to provide an attractive and welcoming atmosphere.
