Protective Coating Systems For Plastics

Plastic substrates vary in composition to a far greater degree that most others. They feature a wide variety of compositional change possibilities, which affect the choice of coating system.

The trend in manufacture of capital goods, including automotive, teletronics; business machines etc is to use more and more plastics, most of which require finishing with decorative systems.

This brochure puts forward our range of coatings options, which can be categorised by product choice and substrate type.

Thermoplastics

Extensive research enables us to offer finishes to suit virtually any type of plastic substrate, including: -

And by use of specially formulated primers and sealers: -

Available in both solvent based and water based grades the range includes both 1 and 2 component paints and lacquers and a variety of finishes. Recent development has seen the introduction of VOC compliant polyurethanes and isocyanate free 2 pack acrylics.

The range provides outstanding technical performance and finishes are available to meet the most exacting standards demanded by a wide number of industries. These include mobile phones; teletronics; automotive; cosmetics and marine where resistance to UV; humidity; temperature cycling; chemical resistance and impact are vital. Our 2 component acrylics are also approved to toy regulations making them ideal for use on items likely to be chewed, including toothbrushes.

Of especial interest will be the new decorative finishes which include: -

Composite and Thermoset Plastics

Derived from coatings developed for use on aero engine composites, two grades of 2 component epoxies, standard and low VOC, are available for use on thermoset plastics.

These products provide excellent adhesion to the range of plastics available and offer high chemical resistance and hardness. As a typical example they have been used for several years to coat phenolic saucepan handles and give coatings that are totally resistant to corrosive dish washer chemicals.

The ranges are available in a wide variety of colours as well as clear lacquers.

Radiation Cure Coatings

The market demand for faster curing high build coatings has led to development work into radiation cured paints and lacquers, especially UVC curable products.

We can now offer a range of products that will give high build and gloss in one coat with cure times of only seconds. The coatings are environmentally sound containing little or no solvents; the diluents used to thin the coatings polymerise to solid during curing.

In addition to providing high build and gloss; additional benefits include high surface scratch resistance; high humidity resistance and with certain grades, excellent exterior durability. UV curable products are now in use on television cabinets; mobile phones and aircraft canopies as examples.

Whilst originally formulated for plastics finishing, recent work has seen the use of UV cure coatings on steel and aluminium castings and composites for automotive and leisure industries.

New work on curing of both pigmented and clear coatings under low energy UVA/B light is progressing with excellent initial results, based around the latest requirements of automotive “smart” repairs.
