The
use of GRP and Carbon Fibre composites in automotive, aerospace and general
industrial applications has increased greatly over the past few years. A number
of recent applications has seen the use of these composites on high quality
visual parts, which has illustrated difficulties in hiding the “tram line” of
the fibre mat using conventional primer/finish systems. Difficulties have also
been experienced with trying to apply thick films of traditional primers to
hide these visual defects with sagging and poor film forming a typical problem.
The high actual weight of these thick films is also a disadvantage in both
aerospace and autosport applications.
Utilising
recent developments with low VOC epoxy resin technology and incorporating a new
low weight filler medium, we have formulated a 2 component high build
primer-filler which solves all the problems encountered.
Dry
film thickness’ up to 200 microns are readily achieved with a one coat
application using conventional spray
equipment and without sagging on vertical surfaces. These film builds
effectively fill the surface of the composite moulding and totally obliterate
any fibre telegraphing.
With
a specific gravity of less than 1.00, even at the high builds possible the
coating does not add significantly to the overall component weight.
